Courteney Cox & David Arquette: Modeling Amiable Divorce

Apr 14, 2014 | Divorce Process, Emotional Effects of Divorce

Courteney Cox and David Arquette are showing Hollywood (and the rest of us) how it’s done. In a society where divorce is often bitter and antagonistic, they are modeling how to achieve an amiable divorce that is so much better for the entire family.

They met on the set of the 1996 movie Scream, and married on June 12, 1999.  Five years and one day later, Courteney gave birth to their daughter, Coco. But the couple separated in 2010, and then finalized their divorce in May, 2013.

Cox recently interviewed with More Magazine. Looking back, she concedes that she might have done some things differently and she has some regrets, but says, “We were married for a long time, so it’s not like we didn’t try.”

Naturally, divorce has a great effect on children, but Cox and Arquette are committed to continuing to raise Coco together. They continue to do things together as a family and assert that their daughter’s lifestyle has not been much affected. Cox states, “For Coco, nothing changed. I already had a house at the beach, and we had a house in town. Obviously, kids always want their parents to be together, but as divorces go, this is the best one we could provide.”

One important way they are mitigating the effects of divorce on their daughter is by showing love and respect towards each other even after the peaceful divorce. In her interview with More.com, Cox explained how she and Arquette have remained friends: “…when you love someone, you want them to be happy, even if it’s not with you. You can love somebody so much, but it’s not the life you should be living together. I think David and I are supposed to be the way we are now.”
