Types of Lawyers: Not All Attorneys Are Created Equal

Aug 19, 2015 | Dealing with Divorce Lawyers, Divorce Process

Types of lawyers may not be something that most people consider, but if you are facing a legal action like divorce, it is imperative that you choose the right attorney, rather than just any attorney. Much like going to a specialist for a medical problem, you’ll want to seek the attorney best suited to handle your particular legal issues, no matter what they might be.

So what types of lawyers are there? You’d be surprised at how many specialties there are under the very large umbrella of basic law. There are lawyers for everything from real estate transactions to filing bankruptcy, from suing for child custody to defending yourself against criminal charges. The type of legal business you have will dictate which type of lawyer you require.

The two most widely known types of lawyers are criminal attorneys and personal injury attorneys. Criminal attorneys defend an individual who has been accused of breaking the law. They can appear in court to argue everything from a disturbing the peace citation to murder. Personal injury attorneys are the ones you see advertising on TV. They take on cases where individuals have been hurt in an accident or due to medical malpractice or similar situations.

But when asking what types of lawyers are there, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are also lawyers who spend more time in the boardroom than the courtroom. Corporate attorneys, bankruptcy attorneys, estate attorneys and tax lawyers deal with business related law or laws that govern personal finance, settling an estate or dealing with the IRS.

Laws that focus on interpersonal relationships belong in a category known as family law. Family lawyers can handle everything from adoption to child custody and everything in between. These are also the types of lawyers that deal with marital relationships, including drafting pre-nuptial agreements and handling the intricacies of divorce.

Of course, no couple ever wants to consider the possibility of divorce and hopefully there will be other options you can choose to avoid this. If no other option is working for you and you are forced to face up to the reality of divorce, then you’ll want to do your homework before proceeding legally. The first step is to ask what types of lawyers are there and find the right one to handle your case.

Because divorce can be so difficult as it is, you don’t want to exacerbate the problem by hiring the wrong kind of attorney. The types of lawyers that you want to reach out to are those who are well versed in the intricacies of divorce law and are ready to provide you with helpful advice and expert guidance. That way, even though you are going through a difficult time you’ll be able to rest easier knowing that you are in good hands.

Divorce is never easy but the right lawyer can help to make the process go as smoothly as possible, something that can be extremely important for all parties involved. If you are considering divorce, be sure to take your time and make the right choice of attorney. Remember that this one simple decision could impact the rest of your life and the lives of your loved ones, so choose wisely.
