Should the Royal Couple Have a Prenuptial Agreement?

Apr 27, 2011 | Divorce Process

Well, with the upcoming “royal” wedding upon us, what do you think about them getting a prenup? According to an article on Yahoo, “In a poll currently being conducted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, 66 percent of respondents have voted ‘yes’ in favor of a sensible prenuptial for William and Katherine. “ So I guess there’s a lot of support for this.

Do you have a prenuptial agreement? Most of us do not; do we need one? Well, I’ve been divorced for many years, and if I were to tie the knot again, I know that I would want a prenup. It’s very important to me that my children receive my assets and I know of no better way to convey that then by having a written agreement so we both put our cards on the table before we make the big leap.

Money is such a difficult subject to discuss when you’re in love, romantic and thinking about your wonderful day when you join forces. But how many divorces happen due to money issues? A lot of them; it’s my belief after being in this industry for 16 years, that marriages become difficult for two main reasons, which are: money issues and lack of communication. A lot of the money problems happen because the two people involved have very different ideas about how to spend and save money resulting in opposing money habits that are difficult to reconcile. It’s often that one is a spendthrift and the other a saver. In fact, I know of a lot of cases, where one person sneaks their spending and is not honest to the other party about what they do with their money. Well, a prenup won’t solve these problems, but it can help to sort them out and bring the discussion to a level where you can figure you how to protect yourself and still marry your love. It’s much better than going into something blindly or naively and getting into a difficult marriage. With the divorce rate at 50%, whatever you can do before you marry to address your issues will help you have a more satisfying marriage.
