Amicable Divorce Trend Among Celebrities

Jun 30, 2014 | Divorce Process

Celebrities are often trend-setters, and one of these trends that we wholeheartedly support is amicable divorce (also known as peaceful divorce), without litigation.

We recently wrote about Courteney Cox and David Arquette and how they are modeling amicable divorce by showing love and respect for one another both during and after their breakup. We also applauded Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin in a recent blog article for their “conscious uncoupling” while still remaining a family for their children.

There are many more examples of celebrity couples who have determined to divorce peacefully, often without lawyers, to minimize the emotional and psychological damage that divorce can have on a family. Here are just a few –

Scarlett Johansson & Ryan Reynolds
Married in 2008 and divorced in 2011, movie stars Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers) and Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern) managed to have what Scarlett called a “comically amicable” divorce, and while both are in relationships with other people now, they still remain friends.

Melanie Lynskey & Jimmi Simpson
“Two And A Half Men” star Melanie Lynskey and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Jimmi Simpson recently finalized their divorce amicably and without lawyers. They both agreed to split their assets fairly and agreed that neither of them should be paid spousal support.

Orlando Bloom & Miranda Kerr
British actor Orlando Bloom and supermodel Miranda Kerr were together for six years and married for three, but have parted amicably and have remained friends for the sake of their son, Flynn.

Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman
They seemed perfect for each other, but the 10-year marriage of movie stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman ended in divorce in 2001. They have a friendly relationship and still share the responsibilities toward their two children. In the June 2006 issue of Ladie’s Home Journal, Nicole was quoted as saying, “…he was lovely to me and I loved him. I still love him.”

Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony
After splitting up nearly three years ago, singers Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are officially divorced as of June 16, 2014. The ex-couple issued a joint statement in 2011 saying that it was a very difficult decision, but that they “have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters.” They have both requested joint legal and physical custody of their two children, and have maintained a cordial relationship.

So why this trend toward peaceful, friendly divorces? I think it’s because people are finally realizing how much better life is when they approach divorce without all the drama and vitriol, and view it as a way to move forward while protecting their children as much as possible. Plus, a non-litigated, amicable divorce, where both parties feel they have been treated fairly and respectfully, encourages cooperation in the future. They also are discovering that it can save them thousands of dollars over a long, drawn-out litigated divorce.
